The picks
★Lightest
OspreyTalon 22
Best for: Fast day hikes and multi-sport days
A 22 L, 2.38 lb men's multi-sport pack with an AirScape backpanel, BioStretch harness and hipbelt, and a 10 to 30 lb load range.
What we like
- Lightest of the three
- Trekking pole, ice axe and bike helmet attachments
- Zippered hipbelt pockets
Watch out for
- Smallest capacity here
- Load range tops out at 30 lb
Osprey lists the Talon 22 at 22 L and 2.38 lb, with a 10 to 30 lb load range. It uses an AirScape backpanel that sits close to the body and a BioStretch harness and hipbelt that wrap around without a break. Osprey adds a trekking pole attachment, an ice axe loop and a LidLock bike helmet clip, so the same pack works for hiking and riding.
★Best ventilation
OspreyStratos 24
Best for: Hot-weather hikes where back ventilation matters
A 24 L, 2.95 lb men's day-hiking pack that Osprey sells as a ventilated day-hiking pack and a 10 to 30 lb load range.
What we like
- Ventilated back for hot days
- Mid-size capacity for most day hikes
- Same 30 lb top load as the Talon
Watch out for
- Heavier than the Talon 22
- Osprey's manual and product page list different weights
The Stratos 24 gives you 2 more liters than the Talon and weighs 2.95 lb on Osprey’s current page, with the same 10 to 30 lb load range. Osprey sells it as a ventilated day-hiking pack for warm days. One catch: an older Osprey owner’s manual lists the Stratos 24 at 2.75 lb, so the current version has gained weight.
★Biggest loads
GregoryZulu 30
Best for: Long days with extra layers, food and water
A men's day pack with a perimeter wire frame, FreeFloat hipbelt, tensioned mesh back, U-Zip main access and a listed 40 lb max carry weight.
What we like
- Highest listed max load here
- U-Zip opens the whole main compartment
- 3.5 in of torso adjustment
Watch out for
- Heaviest of the three
- Capacity and weight vary by size
The Zulu has an alloy steel perimeter frame, a tensioned mesh back and Gregory’s FreeFloat hipbelt. The size on Gregory’s US page lists 28 L, 3.04 lb and a 40 lb max carry weight. Its U-Zip opening gives access to the whole main compartment, and the torso adjusts by 3.5 in.
How to choose
- Match volume to the hike. Count water, food, a warm layer, a rain shell and the Ten Essentials, then pick the smallest pack that fits them.
- Check the torso range. Gregory lists 15 to 19 in for this Zulu size.
- Look at the load range. Pack frames are built for a set weight. Three liters of water alone weigh about 6.6 lb (3 kg).
- Plan for heat. On hot trails a ventilated back matters more than a few ounces of pack weight.
Frequently asked questions
What size daypack do I need?
For a few hours with water, a snack and a layer, the 22 L Talon 22 is enough. If you carry the full Ten Essentials, extra layers and lunch, a 24 to 30 L pack such as the Stratos 24 or Zulu 30 gives more room.
Which pack carries the most weight?
Gregory lists a 40 lb max carry weight for the Zulu 30 size on its US page. Osprey lists a 10 to 30 lb load range for both the Talon 22 and Stratos 24.
Are these men's packs?
Yes, all three are the men's versions. Osprey sells the Tempest and Sirrus as women's versions of the Talon and Stratos. Check Gregory for women's Zulu sizing.
Why do the weights differ from other sites?
Makers update packs between seasons and list weight per size. We copied the figure on each maker page on the date shown on each card.
